How Douglas Lwanga ended up in mass communication class at Makerere

However, while he didn’t know what he wanted to do, he was aware of what he didn’t want.

What he didn’t want was a job that needed him to wear a suit or anything stuffy.

"It's quite crazy. The reason why I did mass communication, I wanted a job where I don't have to put on a tie,” he said in an interview with Crystal Newman “... like I could do my chains, do my jeans, and get a paycheck... I looked through the courses, law is too serious."

He said it's through discussions with friends that mass communication was recommended. He studied mass communication at Makerere University.

Douglas Lwanga said he initially didn't want to be in front of the camera or behind the microphone. 

"I'm a shy person,” he said, “very reserved and shy."

Who is Douglas Lwanga?

Born in Entebbe and raised by a single mom (Robinah Kidandala) after his dad (Sam Musoke) passing, Douglas Lwanga was born with three sisters and he is the only boy & second-last born 

He went to one of the St. Lawrence schools before pursuing Journalism and Mass Communication at Makerere University. 

In O-Level he was part of a dance group that did tours in Uganda and outside Uganda. The group was called The Exclusives and they were managed by a team that included Hakeem The Dream (radio host); Karl, the former manager of Grace Nakimera and Andre Ringen, Nakimera’s ex-husband. 

After university, he started as a photographer at a company called MGS Videos, which was a big events company at the time. He then went to Multitech Business School to pursue a course in graphic design and started earning through making ads.

He left MGS to join Record TV, where he started by filming a show hosted by renowned communications specialist Tina Wamala. 

Record TV later got a new manager who encouraged Douglas Lwanga to start TV presenting after seeing him speak during a meeting.

He left Record to join NTV, then NBS.
