President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation, Eddy Kenzo, has shared a major update on efforts to strengthen copyright protections for local artists.

Kenzo revealed that discussions on amending the Copyright Law had reached a crucial stage, with the draft bill now returning to Parliament for further consideration.

This development follows a meeting at State House Entebbe last August, where President Yoweri Museveni challenged creatives to propose solutions to safeguard their work under the Copyright Law.

Taking up the challenge, Kenzo and his team collaborated with the State House Science team to explore digital and scientific solutions for protecting artists’ intellectual property.

Meeting with President Museveni

Yesterday, Friday, Kenzo, along with key stakeholders from the creative sector and State House scientists, met with President Museveni once again to present their findings.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Speaker Hon Thomas Tayebwa, State Minister for Culture Hon Peace Mutuuzo, and industry leaders including Lillian Mbabazi from the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) and Nassuuna Maureen, Chief Executive of the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS).

Kenzo expressed gratitude for the President’s support and was pleased that the Copyright Amendment Draft Bill had been sent back to Parliament for further review.

“We are optimistic that the amended Copyright Law will be enacted soon,” he stated

Commitment to Enacting the Law

Kenzo reaffirmed the Uganda National Musicians Federation’s dedication to ensuring the amendment is passed.

He also thanked Hon Thomas Tayebwa for his unwavering commitment to the creative sector. “We remain committed to making sure that this amendment is passed and our creativity is protected,” he declared.
