The documentary about Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, titled Bobi Wine: The People’s President shows the singer-turned-politician's challenges as he vied for the Ugandan presidency in the 2021 election.

The documentary was directed by Moses Bwayo, Ugandan, and Christopher Sharp, a British who is the founder and editor-in-chief of Liberation Times and a senior contributing journalist at the Daily Mail.

Bobi Wine is the leader of the National Unity Platform, the leading opposition party in Uganda.

20 Days in Mariupol, which won the award and was directed by Mstyslav Chernov, gives a harrowing first-person account of the early days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

“This is the first Oscar in Ukrainian history, and I’m honored,” an emotional Chernov said, according to Apnews.com. “Probably I will be the first director on this stage to say I wish I’d never made this film, I wish to be able to exchange this to Russia never attacking Ukraine.”

He urged Russia to cease aggression in Ukraine. “I wish for them to release all the hostages, all the soldiers who are protecting their land, all the civilians who are in their jails,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bobi Wine, who was accompanied by his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, and his eldest son, Solomon Kampala, hasn't commented on what transpired night through his social media platforms.

The nomination marked the first time a Ugandan film had earned recognition from the Academy Awards.
