Shamsa Masaba and her mother graduated together during Makerere University’s 75th Graduation Ceremony, which began on Monday, January 13.
While Shamsa earned her Bachelor of Software Engineering, her mother celebrated a monumental achievement with a PhD.
The touching milestone was beautifully captured in a series of TikTok videos shared by Masaba. In one heartwarming clip, the duo can be seen helping each other adjust their graduation caps before walking side by side to celebrate their success. The videos have garnered admiration and emotional responses online.

Makerere University’s 75th graduation ceremony
The ceremony, held at the iconic Freedom Square, will run from January 13 to January 17, showcasing Makerere University’s commitment to academic excellence. This year, a total of 143 PhDs, 1,813 Master’s degrees, 243 Postgraduate Diplomas, 11,455 Undergraduate Degrees, and 8 Undergraduate Diplomas will be conferred.
Among the notable graduates is Abdul Latif Umar Bagoole, who emerged as the best overall student in Humanities, with an impressive CGPA of 4.97 in the Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management. In the Sciences, Enock Joel Mubiru excelled with a CGPA of 4.91 in the Bachelor of Science programme.
Graduation week highlights
The event follows a structured schedule to ensure all graduates are celebrated:
January 13: Graduates from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), the College of Education and External Studies (CEES), the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security (CoVAB), and the School of Law (SoL) were celebrated.
January 14: Graduates from the College of Health Sciences (CHS), College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), and the College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS) will take the spotlight.
January 15: Makerere University Business School (MUBS) graduates, along with various faculties including Graduate Studies, Business Administration, Tourism, Hospitality, and more, will be featured.
January 16: The spotlight will return to MUBS, with graduates from faculties such as Computing, Informatics, Management, and Commerce being honoured.
January 17: The ceremony will conclude with graduates from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT), and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).
