As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Bobi Wine, has issued ground rules for prospective party candidates.
Speaking at the weekly press conference on Monday, Bobi Wine said the party will follow strict standards in selecting its flag bearers in the elections.
He said party cards will be handed out only on the basis of grassroots engagement and integrity.
Emphasis on Grassroots Connection for NUP Aspirants
In a pointed message to individuals aspiring to contest under the NUP banner, Bobi Wine stressed that selection would be based solely on genuine connections with the electorate.
He dismissed the notion that personal ties with the party's top leadership would influence candidacy.
"The only connection is with the people. Everyone here is equal," he declared, advocating for a meritocratic approach centred on public trust and support.
“It is not about knowing the president of the party having connections with the president or being a favourite here at the headquarters.”
2021 Flagbearer Selection Controversies
Bobi Wine was speaking in light of the controversies that marred NUP's flagbearer selection during the 2021 elections.
The party opted against holding primary elections, choosing instead to vet candidates internally—a decision that sparked criticism and allegations of autocratic tendencies.
Political observers cautioned that bypassing open primaries could lead to internal discord and perceptions of predetermined outcomes.
Additionally, there were reports of financial improprieties, with allegations that substantial foreign donations intended for campaign activities were misappropriated by top officials, leaving flagbearers without expected support.
Comprehensive Participation
Meanwhile, Bobi Wine at the press conference described the forthcoming elections as an opportunity for Ugandans to effect meaningful change across all levels of governance.
He urged citizens from diverse backgrounds—professionals, boda boda riders, youth, and the diaspora—to actively participate in the political process
"We need to take power and use it to do good for our people," he stated.
Addressing the youth directly, Bobi Wine encouraged them to register to vote starting 20th January and to consider vying for elective positions.
He emphasised their numerical strength and the necessity of their involvement in leadership roles.
"This is your country, and you have every right to everything in it," he affirmed, urging them not to be intimidated by established political figures.
