Fort Portal Regional Referral Referral Hospital also known as Buhinga Hospital is on the spot following the death of a revered local musician, Moses Kigambo Araari.
Kigambo was a celebrated musician in the western Tooro sub-region, known for his melodic and educative Rotooro songs such as Kisoma Bwire, Tooro Okasemera, and Ekirale among others.
He passed away at the government hospital over the weekend.
Kigambo was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and was due for surgery for a gastrointestinal complication.
Allegations
Following his death on Saturday afternoon, reports started circulating, blaming his passing on the hospital staff.
It was alleged that doctors delayed handling him for two hours.
A person who claims to be close to the deceased said there were long delays in the emergency ward and that even when Kingambo was rushed to the private wing, no one cared to handle him.
He also alleged that some health workers claimed their surgical equipment was not sterilised at the moment.
Hospital responds
The hospital, however, has dismissed the reports as false
Beatrice Batamuriza, the hospital administrator told reporters yesterday that Kigambo was handled promptly upon arrival at the hospital where another clinic referred him.
“We sent him to the surgical ward and the doctors did everything possible to save his life,” she said.
“It is true that he needed surgery but at that moment it was possible because he needed to be stabilised first.”
Bamutariza also dismissed claims that the surgical equipment was not ready, stressing that “our theatre is always ready.”
Dr Lauben Kyomukama who handled the case also emphasised that the delayed surgery was meant to ensure that the patient was in a stable condition.
He said those spreading reports of negligence are those who have always been disgruntled about the hospital services.
