Chaos broke out on Sunday morning at the final send-off of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya at his ancestral home in Kaddugala village in Nyendo, Masaka.

Police and the UPDF deployed heavily amid tension over the burial program.

Parliament Vs NUP

According to reports, supporters of the NUP party and some residents opposed the official government burial program facilitated by the Parliament of Uganda.

The program entailed having the funeral held at a nearby school playground whereas the residents insisted on the funeral being held at Ssegirinya’s home.

Reports of Hon Mathias Mpuuga’s involvement in facilitaing the offical funeral exercebated the situation.

Reports that a group of people led by Hon Mpuuga, with help from the Police and the army, tried to forcefully take the body from the home to the playground sparked anger.

Dozens of NUP “foot soldiers” dressed in red jumpsuits surrounded the house where the body lay, to prevent its removal.

Majority decision

At around 11 am NUP, President Bobi Wine arrived, flanked by his wife Barbie and the party leadership, and the funeral service kicked off.

Hon Muwanga Kivumbi, the MC said they could not allow Parliament to take over the burial, given how NRM MPs shunned the special sitting held to honour the deceased at Parliament on Friday.

A family representative said they decided to go with the majority decision of the residents and the NUP, to have the funeral held at the home.
