Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, the Minister of State for Minerals, shared tidbits of her experiences serving in the cabinet.

Appearing Thursday on Next Radio, she shared some of the privileges that come with the role, including direct interaction with the President.

She revealed that while ministers are not allowed to text the President, they can call him directly.

“Our interaction is not casual, it is normal; it is more cordial. You can speak to him on a daily if need be.”

This she explained, allows ministers to communicate and address issues quickly, making it one of the more rewarding aspects of her job.

The Limiting Disadvantages of the Job

However, Nyamutoro also spoke about the challenges that come with being a minister.

One such disadvantage she said is the highly demanding and limiting schedule.

The Minister explained, “There are lots of hobbies that I would like to venture into but I am limited by time. So I try my best to have as much adventure as I can when there is a little gap.”

Nyamutoro went on to explain how her new lifestyle has meant giving up some of her favourite activities.

“I love swimming, but I don’t get to do that anymore because now I have to be very particular, the place has to be very private,” she shared.

She also mentioned her love for dancing, which she can no longer enjoy freely due to the demands of her office.

“I just do reading now and listening to music,” she added, highlighting how public service often requires personal sacrifices.

Nyamutoro, who also serves as the National Youth MP was appointed to the cabinet in March of last year.
