Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and first son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has deactivated his X (formerly Twitter) account, leaving his one million followers stunned.
The move comes just days after a controversial tweet in which he suggested violent action against National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
In his final tweet, Muhoozi announced that he was stepping away from the platform under “the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ” to focus on the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).
“At an appropriate time in the future…we shall always re-converge,” he assured his followers.
Known for his polarising and sometimes provocative tweets, Gen Muhoozi’s departure has sparked a flurry of reactions online, ranging from sorrow to relief.
Fans Mourn His Departure
Several of Muhoozi’s ardent supporters expressed sadness at his decision to leave the platform. One user, Kirya, tweeted, “I miss General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.”
Others expressed hope for his eventual return, citing his previous hiatuses followed by sudden reappearances on the platform.
Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, shared a reflective message, stating: “The Lord Jesus Christ has summoned and guided him to redirect his focus towards strengthening our nation’s defence forces. We humbly pray that the Almighty grants him a future opportunity to return to social media.”
Critics Weigh In
Not all responses were sympathetic. A user identified as Burg criticised the deactivation, calling it a missed opportunity for Ugandans to scrutinise Muhoozi’s public persona.
“We wanted him to continue exposing himself till all Ugandans get to know who Muhoozi is,” the post read.
Others took a lighter tone. DJ Mozey remarked, “It’s Friday today, don’t be surprised if he bounces back with his usual tweets after one too many.”
A History of Controversy
Gen Muhoozi’s tweets have often placed Uganda in diplomatic hot water. In 2022, his remarks about capturing Nairobi in two weeks strained relations with Kenya, forcing his father, President Museveni, to issue a public apology.
Similarly, his demand for the expulsion of US ambassador William Popp in October 2023 drew criticism for escalating tensions with Uganda’s allies.
