Journalist-turned-politician Miles Rwamiti has set his sights on unseating also former journalist and now Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Joel Ssenyonyi.

Speaking to the press recently, Rwamiti announced that he will contest for the Nakawa East constituency currently represented by National Unity Platform heavyweight Ssenyonyi.

“I am absolutely part of the struggle and still in the struggle,” he said.

Rwamiti lost the 2021 parliamentary elections for Hoima East constituency while under the Forum for Democratic Change party ticket polling a mere 149 votes.

Following the loss, Rwamiti had a change of heart opting to appeal to urban voters in Kampala rather than his upcountry hometown in Hoima.

Other than the change of constituency, Rwamiti is also reportedly planning to cross to the National Resistance Movement. He explained that he was not pleased with the internal strife within his party, opting for the ruling party.

“In certain political parties, it’s not easy to have a dialogue. You have to be in a party that is progressive to the nation’s aspirations. I work with everyone from NRM, DP, FDC and NUP,” he argued.

Rwamiti becomes the latest to eye an NRM ticket for Nakawa East after former RDC Herbert Burora, who also recently stated his intention to represent the party. According to Rwamiti, Nakawa East deserves better leadership.

“There are still many issues in Nakawa that need to be addressed and the voters are aware,” he said.

As the 2026 general elections draw closer, more candidates are expected to announce their intentions.
