President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Hajat Sharifah Buzeki as the new Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
Buzeki is to be deputised by Benon Kigenyi in the new appointments confirmed by State House.
Presidential Press Assistant Farouk Kirunda revealed on Thursday that the names have been forwarded to the Public Service for formalisation.
Once the process is complete, the Head of Public Service and Secretary to Cabinet will officially confirm the appointments.
The appointment of Hajat Buzeki and Mr. Kigenyi follows changes in KCCA's leadership earlier this year.
Former Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, along with her Deputy, Eng. David Luyimbazi, and Director of Public Health, Dr. Daniel Okello, were dismissed in September 2024.
Their dismissal was linked to the tragic collapse of the Kiteezi landfill in August 2024, which resulted in over 35 fatalities.
The incident prompted President Museveni to call for a comprehensive investigation into possible criminal negligence.
Interim Leadership and Legal Proceedings
Following the dismissal of the former officials, Frank Nyakaana Rusa, who was serving as KCCA's Director of Legal Affairs, was appointed as the Acting Executive Director to ensure continuity in the Authority's operations.
His interim tenure was marked by efforts to stabilize the institution during a period of scrutiny and legal challenges.
In October 2024, Dorothy Kisaka, Eng. David Luyimbazi, and Dr. Daniel Okello were arrested and charged with multiple counts, including manslaughter and negligence, in relation to the Kiteezi landfill disaster.
They appeared before the Kasangati Chief Magistrate's Court, where they faced 57 charges and were subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison.
Looking Forward
Hajat Sharifah Buzeki has been serving as a commissioner at the Ministry of Public Service.
Her appointment and Mr. Benon Kigenyi's is anticipated to bring renewed leadership to KCCA.
