"The UPDF will conduct a general recruitment exercise of 9627 regular forces into infantry forces," reads a May 20 statement.

"The actual recruitment exercise will commence on July 1 and end on July 14."

In the statement, the defence spokesperson noted that the procedure for this recruitment exercise will be as follows:

  1. Aspiring candidates applying to join the regular force will get recommendations from LCI, LCII, LCIII, GISO, and DISO.
  2. Thereafter, they will submit their application forms to the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) where they will be registered and awaiting collection by the UPDF collection teams that will submit them to the Office of Joint Staff Human Resource Management which will cause a shortlist.
  3. The list of successful applicants will be published/displayed on the district/city noticeboards informing the shortlisted applicants to appear at designated recruitment centres for the final interviews.
  4. The recruitment will be conducted using the projected population figures of each district/city of Uganda that form the basis of recruitment quotas.

The UPDF is responsible for defending Uganda's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Established after the Ugandan bush war, it has grown from its guerrilla origins into a professional and modern force.

The force originated from the National Resistance Army (NRA), a rebel group led by President Yoweri Museveni.

It is divided into two main branches: the land forces and the air force.

The land forces handle ground operations and internal security, while the air force provides aerial support, surveillance, reconnaissance, and logistics.
