Uganda's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Adonia Ayebare, has urged Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, to focus on her role after she commented on a controversial post by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba on X (formerly Twitter) about attacking Sudan.
Gen. Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni and Chief of Defence Forces, sparked outrage after tweeting threats to capture Sudan's capital, Khartoum, once Donald Trump assumed office as President of the United States.
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the tweets as "reckless and irresponsible," deeming them a violation of international law and the norms governing state relations. The Sudanese government further demanded an official apology from Uganda, asserting that such remarks threatened regional stability.
Byanyima joined the conversation on Thursday, December 19, sharing a letter from South Sudan on X with the caption: "For how long must this go on?"
In response, Ayebare tweeted: "My Sister, you are an international civil servant. Desist from running commentaries on national and regional politics."
Byanyima fired back, saying: "I know my duties and responsibilities @adoniaayebare. You are not an international civil servant. Stay in your lane!"
Ayebare countered: "Being an international civil servant comes with obligations which are clearly stipulated in the UN staff code of conduct. You know what I am talking about. You also know that I have sat on boards of UN agencies which you work for. Madam, I know what I am talking about."
Meanwhile, the Sudanese government reiterated its demand for an official apology from Uganda, stressing that Kainerugaba's remarks posed a significant threat to the region's stability.
