President Yoweri Museveni is expected next week to grace the launch of a new sports stadium in neighbouring Kenya.
Museveni will join his Kenyan counterpart William Ruto to officially open the newly constructed Siaya County Stadium on January 2, 2025.
Siaya Governor James Orengo said the launch will also mark the start of the stadium’s role as a cultural and sporting hub.
The opening ceremony will coincide with the fourth edition of the annual Piny Luo festival, a celebration of Luo culture and traditions.

A Cultural Showcase and Football Match
The three-day festival, beginning on December 31, will feature a wide range of activities, including traditional food, wrestling, boat racing, and performances of Ohangla and Nyatiti music.
The celebrations will culminate in a friendly football match on January 2, pitting Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC against Uganda’s Kitara FC.
Both Presidents Ruto and Museveni will attend the match.
Siaya Prepares for a Memorable Event
Speaking after inspecting the stadium, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo expressed confidence in the venue’s readiness and emphasised the festival’s significance in promoting unity and cultural diversity.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is pursuing the African Union Commission chair position, will also attend the event.
Siaya Deputy Governor Matthew Owili promised a remarkable Piny Luo festival, with final preparations for the stadium, including seating arrangements and painting, nearing completion.
