Chelsea and Ajax met in one of the strangest, most entertaining matches of the Champions League season thus far.
Chelsea got off to a rough start on Tuesday in their Champions League match against Ajax.
Less than two minutes after the opening whistle, Ajax opened the scoring with the help of an own goal from Chelsea's Tammy Abraham, who mistakenly knocked in a free kick struck into the box.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, it wasn't even the most embarrassing moment of the match.
After the teams traded goals, Ajax extended its lead to 3-1 in the 35th minute off of a corner kick.
Midfielder Hakim Ziyech lined up the kick and brilliantly put the ball off of the inside of the far post. As the corner kick entered the box, Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga dove to make the save, but instead was struck directly in the face by the ball after it hit off the post, deflecting it into the net for Chelsea's second own goal of the night.
While things looked bleak for Chelsea, the Blues fought back at Stamford Bridge even after dropping down 4-1 in the 55th minute.
With the help of two red cards from Ajax, Chelsea scored three goals to steal a 4-4 draw on the day, keeping the teams tied atop Group H with seven points apiece.
In the 78th minute, Chelsea almost won the game outright, with a third goal initially awarded to Jorginho only to be called off due to a handball.
While both sides will go home undoubtedly feeling like they left points on the table, the match certainly wound up an entertaining affair.
That said, Chelsea would be well served to cut back on putting the ball in their own net.
