The project will be spearheaded by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a prominent business body from the UAE. This new airport will be strategically located just outside the Kidepo Valley National Park in northeastern Uganda, near the border with Kenya. This location is expected to play a crucial role in boosting tourism by providing easier access to the Kidepo National Park, a 1,442 square kilometre sanctuary renowned for its diverse wildlife, including lions, giraffes, and buffaloes.
Uganda is set to embark on the construction of its third international airport, following the signing of an agreement with a business association from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). President Yoweri Museveni’s office announced the development last weekend marking a significant step in enhancing the country’s infrastructure and tourism capabilities.

Construction is slated to commence in August, according to Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, chairman of the Sharjah business body. The timeline highlights the urgency and commitment both parties have towards the completion of this significant infrastructure project.
President Museveni emphasised that the agreement signifies a deepening of relations between Uganda and its Gulf partners. “This agreement is a sign of the deepening relations with our Gulf partners and another opportunity to co-operate in investment and trade,” Museveni noted in a post on X. This development is poised to expand the UAE's economic footprint in Uganda, which already includes interests in renewable energy and the oil and gas sectors.
The introduction of this airport is expected to have a transformative impact on the region.
