Uganda's state of digital economy: A future of endless possibilities

The recent launch of the State of the Digital Economy at Next Media Park was a resounding success, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the future of digital transformation in Uganda.

The State of the Digital Economy launch at the Next Media Park

The event attended by KTA Advocates, Uganda Institute of Communications and Information Technology,Milima Security, Innovation Village, Centenary Technology services,MOMO,URA,PSFU and Soliton Telmex as partners and Ministry of ICT as Regulators of Technology in Uganda highlighted the critical role of technology in driving economic growth and the need to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Joe Kigozi, in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of understanding, embracing, and customizing digital solutions for all Ugandans.

"The digital economy is the new oxygen we are breathing; it is something we must understand, embrace, and find ways to customize for people without internet access."

This powerful analogy underscores the indispensable nature of the digital economy in modern life.

Panelists from various sectors shared their perspectives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between private sector players and government in driving the digital economy.

Cente Technologies, a subsidiary of the Centenary Group, expressed its excitement about participating in the initiative. "We are thrilled to be part of this initiative because it represents the way forward for Uganda," remarked David from Centenary Group.

The Ministry of ICT's efforts in promoting digital literacy, improving infrastructure, and implementing supportive policies are crucial for the widespread adoption of technology across the country.

Bakwasiibwe Ambrose, Institute Secretary at the Ministry of ICT, highlighted the Ministry's role as an ICT enabler in Uganda. "We play a pivotal role as an ICT enabler in Uganda, facilitating the adoption of technology among Ugandans under the Ministry."

Chagara Emmanuel, CEO of Milima Technologies, addressed the critical issue of security in the digital economy. "You cannot discuss technology and the digital economy without addressing security, which is why we are participating in this campaign."

Emmanuel's remarks underscore the importance of cybersecurity measures in protecting digital assets and ensuring the safety of users.

The Deputy GCEO of Next Media Group highlighted the evolving demands of the digital world on education and skills. "Your degree may not be sufficient in today's fast-evolving digital world. We want to explore which short courses can help you acquire the necessary skills to navigate and excel in the digital space."

This perspective draws attention to the necessity of continuous learning and upskilling to stay relevant in the digital economy.

Uganda has seen a steady increase in internet penetration, with approximately 23 million internet users as of 2023.

This growth has been largely fueled by the proliferation of affordable smartphones and mobile data services. Mobile phones are the primary means of internet access for the majority of Ugandans, making mobile connectivity a crucial aspect of the digital economy.

The State of the Digital is slated to happen on July 26 at the Next Media Park.
