As this year’s BEAST MVP campaign gains momentum, showcasing fierce competition, NRG Radio is profiling past winners in a news series titled.
"From NRGETIC MVPs to BEAST MVPs." In this first installment, we spotlight Big Boy Shaque, reflecting on his journey and achievements since joining NRG Radio.
Ishaque Nsubuga, now a prominent figure on NRG Radio, co-hosts the #NRGBreakfastShowUG alongside Eka, the reigning NRG MVP Radio Queen, and the well-known Prim Asiimwe. The show, enriched by the dynamic mixes of DJ Beats, airs live every Monday to Friday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
“Don’t hesitate to listen to us as you make your way to work, campus, or as you get ready for school,” Ishaque encourages.
Big Boy Shaque's career is multifaceted; he is not only a radio host but also a multimedia journalist, voice-over artist and coach, poet, and English language tutor. His professional journey began in 2016 as an MC at high school events, alongside his involvement in debating and poetry writing.
He ventured into voice-over artistry as a freelancer, lending his voice to the renowned MTN Data bundles ads. His passion for radio was ignited in 2020 when he joined the Media Challenge Initiative, where he worked on their online MCI Radio. It was through this initiative that he learned about the #NRGeticMVPs contest, which he eventually won.
Looking back
Reflecting on his experience, Ishaque recalls his initial hesitation about auditioning for the NRGETIC MVPs campaign in 2023, fearing it might be a scam like many others in Kampala.
“I submitted my video at the last minute, just to try, and it turned out to be the best decision of my year. It transformed my career,” he says. Walking into NRG Radio for the first time, he knew he had to give his best.
“The auditions were challenging, with many talented and well-known contestants. But by being true to myself, I managed to win the Radio King category.” This victory became the highlight of his year.
When asked why he chose NRG, Ishaque explains that the job felt like a perfect fit for his identity and exceeded all his expectations. He praises the vibrant and respectful team at NRG Radio.
“Working alongside Prim Asiimwe, who has been in the industry for a while, is a privilege. I learn so much from her every day. My fellow winners from the MVPs experience, Eka and DJ Beats, have become like family.”
Being part of the NRG Breakfast Club is an incredible experience for Ishaque. He loves the connection with listeners every morning, entertaining and engaging them as they start their day.
“It’s amazing to be part of their routine and bring energy and joy to their mornings.”
For those aspiring to participate in the BEAST MVPs Challenge, Ishaque advises being genuine and letting your personality shine.
“Remember, your only real competition is yourself. Show up as your best self each time, and you'll have a great chance at winning,” he says.
As the BEAST MVP campaign continues to heat up, stories like Big Boy Shaque’s serve as an inspiration for new participants. His journey from an aspiring talent to a celebrated radio host at NRG Radio underscores the transformative power of perseverance and authenticity.
