According to Cool, Chameleone, real name Joseph Mayanja, used to be his fan and he went out of his way to get close to him.
The friendship between Bebe Cool and Jose Chameleone has probably lasted long because it took longer to build. They've been through some tough times together.

"He was just my fan; he wasn't a singer. Mayanja was my fan. When I used to sing at Ecstacy in Banda, Mayanja had these fuel-powered motorcycles, but they were also cycle-abe. Mayanja liked Bebe Banton (Cool's old name). He used to fear me, a lot. And, so, he decided, to get close to this dude, let me exploit his weakness. And those days, we used to be broke. So, he would wait at Ecstacy and ask to ride me home for free. And the artiste would enjoy the ride for free. After dropping me off, he would ask, are you working tomorrow so I can pick you up?" Cool said in a media interview, further talking about how they met in Kenya.
"So, we got to know each other... Later, I went to Kenya. When he discovered that I was in Kenya, he called me over the phone and he realised he knew someone in Nairobi. And I told him, come and we work... Then I was working with Redsan, so when Chameloene came, I formed... the East African Bashment Crew... we worked together for about five, four years... and in the process, Chameleone got a woman, Dorotia [Chameleone and Dorotia, a Belgian national – whose real name is Griet Onsea – have a daughter named Ayla Onsea Mayanja and she was born in May 2002]... We used to stay together at the studio and he left to stay with his woman... the woman had money; she had cars... and I was happy for him."
Bebe Cool said that after Chameleone left to stay with Dorotia his music career also took off and they started beefing.
"... then beef came up as a result of competition, but it was exclusively about music, nothing personal... We even fought in Nairobi... then we separated and he stayed with Redsan and I went solo," he said.
Cool and Chameleone first met in 1995. Cool went to Nairobi in 1997 ahead of Chameleone who left in the early 2000s.
