The celebrated music producer, who extensively discussed his music journey and how he teamed up with Kyazze to start Swangz Avenue, acknowledged that the transition was not properly managed.
Some of his friends felt betrayed and developed a disliking towards Kyazze.
Initially, Benon Mugumbya, passionate about music, helped his friends record music for free, running things in a laissez-faire manner until Kyazze came in. They had to structure the business and move from Muswangali Zone along Salaama Road to Muyenga, a leafy Kampala suburb.
However, Mugumbya noted that over time, his friends understood the situation, and they have since reconciled. He still gets booked with Vampino to perform at events.
Vampino, whose real name is Elvis Kirya, was recently asked to comment on the alleged betrayal.
“Some people complain, ‘Why don’t you have a percentage? Why don’t you have a percentage?’ But the biggest percentage I have is being the founder of this thing, and it is making a big name,” said the singer, noting that Kats, whose real name is Edwin Katamba, was partly right.
“That means my dream is already partly being realised... Something we saw as a joke; to me, that even makes me happier... We don’t need to look at money first... Look at what you initiated, how far it is going. How far these guys have taken it!”
At the time Benon Mugumbya started Swangz Avenue as a music production studio, he was one half of Benon and Vamposs.
