Born Israel Mbonyicyambu, he developed a passion for music at a young age. Growing up in Musanze, Ruhangeri City, Rwanda, he received musical training from a local music teacher. Out of a class of 30 students, Mbonyi was the only one who completed the course, mastering the guitar and laying the foundation for his future musical career.

Mbonyi's debut song, "Number One," was released on March 10, 2014, coinciding with the launch of his first album of the same title. The album featured eight tracks, including "Yankuyeho Urubanza," "Ku Migezi," "Nzibyo Nibwira," "Ku Musaraba," "Ndanyuzwe," "Hari Impamvu," and "Agasambi." These songs, sung primarily in his native language, Kinyarwanda, resonated deeply with listeners and established Mbonyi as a significant figure in gospel music.

In 2023, Israel Mbonyi expanded his musical reach by releasing his first Swahili song, "Nina Siri," on June 26. This hit single introduced him to a broader East African audience, particularly in Tanzania and Kenya, and marked his entry into the regional and international music scene. The song's success propelled Mbonyi to new heights, earning him widespread acclaim and a growing fan base.

In addition to his musical career, Mbonyi is also pursuing academic excellence. In a 2022 interview on RTV, he revealed that he was nearing the completion of his master's degree in Public Health. He mentioned that if he were not making music full-time, he would consider a career in public health, demonstrating his commitment to making a positive impact beyond the music industry.
