UWA reopens Margherita Peak for hiking after safety boost

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) announced the resumption of hiking activities to Margherita Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park today, lifting a suspension that had been in place since May 14, 2024. The initial suspension was a response to safety concerns due to a significant crevasse (crack) formation in the Margherita glacier, identified during a routine assessment.

Bashir Hangi, the Communications Manager for UWA, stated, "After thorough evaluations and enhancements, we are thrilled to reopen Margherita Peak to hikers, ensuring both thrilling adventures and heightened safety."

The improvements include the construction of a new bridge over the glacier's crevasse and the installation of additional climbing ropes, facilitating safer and more secure ascents and descents.

The decision to suspend hiking activities earlier this year followed reports of potential dangers posed by the crevasse, raising concerns over the safety of the numerous adventurers who visit the park each year.

In response, UWA had proposed installing a permanent ladder to ensure safer passage. Today's announcement marks a significant upgrade to the infrastructure, aimed at safeguarding hikers against similar risks in the future.

Margherita Peak, standing at 5,109 meters, is one of Africa's highest and most challenging summits. Known for its steep, slippery trails and the technical climbing skills required, the trek attracts thousands of tourists annually who are eager to conquer its heights and enjoy the stunning alpine scenery.

The peak forms part of the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the "Mountains of the Moon," a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its unique ecosystems ranging from afro-montane forests to afro-alpine zones.

The Rwenzori Mountains are renowned not only for their breathtaking beauty but also for their diverse flora and fauna, which contribute to the region's rich biodiversity. While the trek to Margherita Peak is particularly strenuous, it offers rewarding vistas and a profound sense of achievement for those reaching the summit.

In addition to reopening Margherita Peak, UWA encourages visitors to explore other peaks within the park, such as Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Cheptegei Peak on the Stanley Range. Each route promises a unique adventure and showcases the diverse landscapes and ecological beauty of the Rwenzoris.

UWA has committed to maintaining close monitoring of the hiking routes to ensure ongoing safety and will continue to provide updates as needed. The authority emphasizes that the safety and well-being of all visitors remain a top priority, and these enhanced measures are a testament to UWA's dedication to offering a safe, enjoyable, and memorable hiking experience.

Adventurers and nature enthusiasts are invited to return to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park to experience the enhanced trails and the majestic beauty of Margherita Peak, confident in the measures taken to ensure their safety. As the park welcomes back hikers, it stands as a symbol of resilience and commitment to conservation and adventure tourism in Uganda.
