Ugandan culture takes center stage at 2024 Embassy Chef Challenge in US

At the 2024 Embassy Chef Challenge, a culinary event in Washington D.C., Ugandan culture took center stage. The event, held at Union Station, saw 23 embassies compete for the People's Choice and Judges' Choice Awards.

Chef Sentie Kironde, a renowned Ugandan chef based in Boston, represented Uganda. His stall showcased Ugandan cuisine, featuring steamed matooke (plantains), stewed goat (katogo), groundnut stew (luwombo) for vegans, fresh vegetables, Ugandan coffee, and Uganda Waragi cocktails – a total of over 1,000 guests sampled the menu.

The Ugandan stall's success was supported by the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID). PACEID coordinated Ugandan products, including Uganda Waragi gin from Uganda Breweries Limited, coffee from ORONCAFE, and Tooke Flour from the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development.

"Uganda Waragi embodies Ugandan culture and heritage," said Hillary Baguma, Brand Manager for Uganda Breweries. "We're proud to showcase Ugandan food, culture, and Uganda Waragi, a high-quality gin made in Uganda."

Beyond the competition, the event fostered cultural exchange. Embassies connected with Ugandan diaspora communities in the U.S., highlighting Ugandan culture, commerce, and culinary traditions.

The Embassy Chef Challenge is an annual celebration of global cuisine, and Uganda's participation was a delicious success.
