Origins of 'Netflix and Chill' and what to say instead

In January 22 2009, a Twitter user @NoFaceNina tweeted "I'm about to log onto Netflix and chill for the rest of the night." The seemingly innocent tweet has since escalated into slang for casual hookups, but what complications have come with this laid-back attitude.

Origins of 'Netflix and Chill' and what to say instead

Since its inception, the Urban Dictionary has defined Netflix and Chill as "When you go to your partner’s house and watch Netflix which then escalates to sexual activities."

However, it has since been written off as contributing factor to a toxic dating culture by relationship experts.

Using coded language to communicate about sex is seen as a copout so that someone doesn't have to express his or her sexual expectations. For such a simple invitation, it releases people from taking responsibility and being accountable for their actions.

For those who struggle with being open about what they are into and what they don't want, it is a relief to use 'Netflix and Chill' to express themselves.

Moreover, 'Netflix and Chill' is considered safe in pursuing our needs from others, but it can be easily misunderstood. While it might save you from being outright rejection for the one asking, it can make someone feel pressured into sexual activity because they have been invited for movie night.

According to Michelle Herzog, LMFT and founder of The Center For Modern Relationships, fulfilling dating lives involves creating healthy communication that establishes boundaries and expectations.

"Even if it feels awkward to say something like, 'I’m really attracted to you. How do you feel about exploring this relationship sexually?' It might seem scary to broach the topic in such a straightforward way, but the benefits ultimately outweigh the risks. You'll get a clear answer, know where you stand with the other person, and can then actually focus on whatever you're watching on Netflix with them," says Herzog.

For couples who are already in relationships, it can be a cheeky way to ask a partner over.
