Burnout is exhaustion caused by constantly feeling swamped; a result of prolonged emotional, physical, and mental stress. In most cases, burnout related to one's job. Burnout happens when you're overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to keep up with life's incessant demands.

A person could be burned out if he or she gets the common cold or flu more frequently than others.

People who are burned out can feel like nothing they do is appreciated or makes a difference, as a result, they may isolate themselves from others. This is also a sign that a person is too exhausted.

Aches and pains can also be a physical sign of burnout. When you're stressed, your muscles automatically tense up to guard the body against pain and injury resulting in pain. Typical places the body holds tensions include: the shoulders, neck, head, and back.
