"Maria Branyas has passed away. She died the way she wanted: in her sleep, peacefully and without pain," her family wrote on Tuesday on the 117-year-old's account on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

Maria Branyas Morera spent the last two decades of her life living in a nursing home in Santa Maria del Tura in northeastern Spain.
In her last post on X, she wrote that she felt weak.
"The time is near. Don't cry, I don't like tears. Wherever I go, I will be happy," the family that ran the account wrote on behalf of the 117-year-old.
Guinness World Records officially recognised Branyas as the world's oldest person in January 2023, following the death at the age of 118 of French nun Lucile Randon.
