The report which is titled UN Country Results Report 2022 revealed that the highest levels of food insecurity are in the northern and eastern regions of Uganda.

According to Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the regions are severely food insecure when they run out of food which leads to people going hungry for days.

The report also highlights a myriad of climate-related emergencies and shocks that the country experienced in 2022. These include: COVID-19, Ebola outbreak and a high refugee influx from both South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the report, Karamoja sub-region has been the most affected in the whole country.

Karamoja has experienced two consecutive seasons of food scarcity characterised by less than normal crop and animal production.

Last year, Government earmarked sh135b for famine-striken-areas including Karamoja sub-region.

This was revealed by the Prime Minster, Robinah Nabbanja, who said Government would focus on the region since was the most affected.

Other than providing food donations to alleviate the hunger, Nabbanja added that this will include seeds for planting.

“I want to assure you colleagues that over 200 metric tons of food have gone to Karamoja and we want to see how to secure Karamoja because as it stands now, Karamoja is still insecure,” she said.

Nabbanja made this revelation on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at a sitting of Parliament chaired by Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa.

The prime minister explained that the Cabinet sitting on Monday, July 11 noted with concern about the situation in Karamoja and came up with proposals to resolve the matter.
