The trip is planned for August this year.
A leaked letter from the Ugandan Embassy in Germany confirmed that the speaker had been granted a private audience by Pope Francis on Saturday, August 24.
In the letter addressed to the Clerk of Parliament, Amb. Steven Mubiru wants the speaker to send in the necessary details of her travel including the team she is travelling with, media equipment and where she will be staying in Rome.
It was not yet clear why the Speaker’s travel was being facilitated by the German rather than the Italian embassy.
Sanctions
Speaker Among was this week slapped with sanctions by the United States government along with her husband Eng. Moses Magogo and other officials over corruption and serious abuses of human rights.
Among was sanctioned “due to involvement in significant corruption tied to her leadership” of Uganda’s national assembly, the U.S. State Department said.
This followed earlier sanctions by the UK government on the speaker on related grounds.
Among was last in Rome in August 2023 where she met Pope Francis and informed him that she was expecting a child.
Two months later, she announced that she and her husband had welcomed a set of twins.
