Anita Among slams police for teargassing Ssenyonyi; explains MP Akamba’s arrest

House speaker Anita Among has Wednesday morning chastised police for using excessive force on the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Hon Joel Senyonyi, while he did his oversight work in Kampala early this week.

Among told parliament that she was distraught to hear that LOP and his team were teargassed when they went to check on residents in Nansana, who last week had their houses and properties razed down by NEMA for building in proximity with the Lubigi wetland system.

“I tried to call (LOP) but he was busy. I watched three days back and I was disappointed to see the head of opposition out there doing his oversight role in Nansana and his team was teargassed. That was unfortunate because much as we are not supposed to interfere with Nemas' work, by the time someone starts construction and lives in a place for years… and Nema doesn't know that this is a gazetted area… this is a problem,” she said.

We already have malls built in wetlands. But If someone is going to check on these people and is teargassed, where shall we get refuge in this country? It was not called for.

Meanwhile, the speaker provided an update on Hon Paul Akamba (MP Busiki County) who was recently arrested outside of the High Court, after initially securing bail.

She said following a meeting she had in her office with police chiefs, she was informed that the MP is currently held up at the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters, answering to fresh charges of another crime he is accused of.

The Speaker also revealed that she had agreed with the Police to present her with the summons of all MPs, instead of the Police picking up her MPs anyhow.

“We held a meeting yesterday, in my office with the Head of Investigative bodies and we will get a report especially on the brutal arrest not only of our members but everyone out there,” she said.

One thing I insisted to the Police is that if you want to arrest my members, give the summons to me. Because originally, they would like to pick people anyhow, I said, give me the summons. And as you bring the summons, it shouldn’t be on hearsay, the list of 30 sijuyi those things. Tell me exactly why you want this person. I have the summons and as I speak now, Akamba is at the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters answering charges on allegations of another case,” said Among.
