“All Uganda Shillings banknotes issued by BoU bear the signatures of the Governor BoU and the bank secretary. In the absence of the Governor, the Deputy Governor may sign in his or her presence,” the statement reads in part.
It further reads: “The public is hereby advised that BoU has issued banknotes into circulation, of different denominations, that bear the signature of the Deputy Governor, Micheal Atingi-Ego.”
The statement also indicated that the new notes do not in anyway mean that some of the current notes that bear the signature of the deceased Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile are illegal.
“The banknotes bearing Mutebile’s signature will continue to be issued alongside the new banknotes with Atingi’s signature. The public is therefore advised to continue using the notes when doing transaction,” the statement read.
It is now a year since Mutebile died, and his position hasn’t yet been filled. There has only been speculation about the those inline to succeed Mutebile as Governor.
Some of the people who have been pointed out include: Prof Augustus Nuwagaba, Ramthan Ggoobi and Michael Atingi-Ego among others.
The late Mutebile died on January 23, 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya after battling with the debilitating effects of diabetes.
