Bobi Wine gives way to Museveni in Kawempe, Party office launch postponed

The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) was Thursday forced to reschedule the unveiling of its new head office in Kampala following a stand-off with security.

Police and the army deployed heavily at the NUP party offices

The three-storied headquarters building in Makerere Kavule, in Kawempe Division was meant to be launched by the party president Robert Kyagulanyi, but the opposition leadership failed to get clearance from the security agencies.

Just two days before the launch, the NUP was informed that police would not be able to secure the event because of many other “VIP” activities taking place in the same area at the same time.

It is understood that President Yoweri Museveni happened to have an event in Kawempe on the same date.

Kawempe RCC Yasin Ndidde in his letter to the party leadership, advised them to choose another date for the office launch and inform the relevant authorities about it.

Initially, Bobi Wine and the party leadership shrugged off the RCC’s communication as “ridiculous” and vowed not to “comply with his illegal orders.”

However, on Thursday morning, Police together with the UPDF’s military police deployed heavily at the new offices, preventing anyone from accessing it.

With no possibility of carrying on with the function, the NUP announced in the afternoon that they were postponing the launch to the following day.

This morning, the regime security operatives sabotaged our programmes when they blocked our offices and made them inaccessible for our leaders, invited guests, staff, and also comrades who had wished to be part of this event,” said the party in the statement.

We have thus decided to reschedule our ceremony to tomorrow, November 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., for the comfort and convenience of our guests.

Bobi Wine, while confirming the postponement, described the security deployment as “cowardly.”
