Bobi Wine makes bold promises at Lubaga Hospital fundraiser

Last night, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was the chief guest at a fundraising dinner organised to support Lubaga Hospital's efforts to upgrade its CT scan machine. The event, held at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Lubaga, attracted several key figures from the National Unity Platform (NUP), including Vice President Lina Zedriga, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, Members of Parliament, and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

During his address, Bobi Wine commended Lubaga Hospital for its ongoing commitment to providing quality healthcare. The hospital’s current need for a new CT scan machine was at the forefront of the evening’s discussions.

Many attendees, including Mayor Lukwago, echoed the importance of acquiring the machine, citing its potential to reduce the need for Ugandans to seek medical services abroad.

Lukwago remarked that upgrading the hospital's equipment would help stem the rising trend of medical tourism and ensure that vital healthcare services remain accessible within Uganda.

Bobi Wine used his speech to highlight the importance of collective action in addressing Uganda’s healthcare challenges.

"It is very important for us as citizens of this country, and as potential victims of this sick healthcare system, to do something," he said, emphasising that his involvement in the fundraiser was not driven by political motives but by moral responsibility.

He noted that the nation’s healthcare system is in dire need of reform and that citizens must step up where the government has fallen short.

Reflecting on the state of public spending, Bobi Wine took the opportunity to criticise what he sees as wasteful expenditure by the current government. He pointed out that the Ugandan State House spends Shs 2 billion daily, a sum he believes could be redirected to improving essential healthcare services.

"When I recieved the invitation, I felt so bad about the person who stole my votes in the last election because that Shs 2billion that is spent by State House every day, if I were the president, I think I would just need to sleep the whole day and that money goes goes to buying a CT scan," he said.

During his address, Bobi Wine made two pledges. The first was a long-term commitment, which he assured would take effect once he becomes president. He promised to increase the healthcare budget and redirect funds from what he described as unnecessary government expenditures.

"You will not suffer again. Every Health Centre IV will have a CT scan," he declared.

In the short term, Bobi Wine and the NUP made a financial contribution of Shs 10 million to support Lubaga Hospital’s immediate efforts to acquire the CT scan machine. He expressed hope that the donation would bring the hospital closer to its goal and urged others to contribute as well.
