Civil aviation body limits Entebbe Airport access as Hajj pilgrims return

Entebbe International Airport

As the Hajj season concludes, a significant number of pilgrims are making their return journey through Entebbe International Airport. This influx is anticipated to bring an increase in both foot and vehicular traffic at the airport, prompting the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) to implement new measures aimed at managing congestion and ensuring smooth operations.

Vianney Luggya, spokesperson for the UCAA, highlighted the expected increase in the number of people visiting the airport to welcome returning pilgrims. To address potential congestion issues, the UCAA is urging all passengers, particularly those with scheduled flights during this period, to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to their departure. This precaution is advised to accommodate the anticipated larger-than-usual crowds and the consequent traffic build-up around the airport premises.

The UCAA is also taking proactive steps to regulate the flow of vehicles and people within the airport vicinity. In coordination with the Uganda Bureau of Hajj Affairs, the authority is issuing special stickers to vehicles designated to pick up returning pilgrims. This measure will restrict airport entry to one vehicle per returning pilgrim, aiming to significantly reduce the usual traffic congestion.

Furthermore, for larger welcoming parties, the UCAA has arranged an alternative waiting area. A nearby football pitch just outside the airport has been designated as a gathering spot for friends and family members awaiting the return of their loved ones. This setup is intended to prevent overcrowding at the airport's main terminals and facilitate a smoother flow of traffic.

Additionally, another welcoming area has been established in the car parking section of the arrivals area. This area is designed to accommodate the welcoming crowds while limiting their impact on the operational areas of the airport, thereby ensuring that other travellers using the airport are not inconvenienced.

These measures reflect the UCAA's commitment to maintaining order and safety at Entebbe International Airport during high-traffic periods. By planning ahead and implementing strategic controls, the authority aims to ensure a positive and hassle-free experience for all airport users.

The success of these initiatives will depend largely on the cooperation of the public and adherence to the guidelines set forth by the UCAA. As the airport gears up for the return of the pilgrims, both travellers and greeters are encouraged to comply with the new regulations, contributing to a smooth and efficient operation at Uganda’s primary international gateway.
