Some of the members that lost in the primaries and proceeded to stand as independents include Ingrid Kamateneti Ingrid Turinawe, Winnie Babihuga and Tweyambe Darius.

In his petition, dated March 10, 2022, Byamugisha who is also FDC former presidential candidate petitioned the party leadership to dismiss a letter by the Secretary General dated December 7, 2020, which declared that independent candidates lost their party membership. He cites the lack of an election tribunal that would have conclusively dealt with the loser’s petitions as good grounds to nullify the Secretary General’s letter.
Byamugisha requests that the party leadership make sure that the relevant party branches are informed that the said members have never lost membership of the party as their dismissal was illegal.
The letter added that FDC needs the old members back more than ever, especially after the party performed poorly in last year’s general election.
“Mr Chairman, for some of us, it has been 21 years of struggle in opposition which has not been easy. Many of our colleagues have died, others maimed, some imprisoned while others have retired. So if we have people who are still passionate about pushing for change, let’s welcome them and work together,” he wrote.
