Former NEMA Chief Executive Tom Okurut passes on

Dr Okurut died on Sunday afternoon at Platinum Hospital, Nakasero, Kampala.

The deceased served for ten years as NEMA executive director from 2011, before being succeeded Dr Barirega Akankwasa the current executive director.

He was also the husband of Dr Anne Rose Ademun, the Commissioner of Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.

NEMA confirmed the sad news last night positing, “We have just learned of the untimely passing of Dr. Tom Okia Okurut, who was the Executive Director of NEMA from 2011-2021.”

Okurut obtained his postgraduate studies at IHE Delft, the Netherlands after graduating from Makerere University.

He was recognised with the IHE Delft Alumni Award 2014 for his outstanding contributions to water management.

He worked as the first executive secretary of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission based in Kisumu, Kenya, before returning home to head NEMA.
