Gen. Bakasumba lauds French training support to UPDF

The Chief of Joint Staff, Maj. Gen. Jackson Bakasumba, hailed the French government for its continued support of the training of Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), which has significantly enhanced the fight against terrorism.

The UPDF chief relayed this while hosting the French Defence Attaché, Lt. Col. Yam Chollet, at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

“We share the credit with you, our partners. Thank you so much for that support. We appreciate so much for the training support," Maj. Gen. Jackson Bakasumba said.

"UPDF soldiers reach the mission area when they are well trained, and the performance is very good as expected by the leadership.”

Lt. Col. Yam Chollet praised Ugandan forces' efforts towards creating peace in the region.

“I appreciate your capabilities and highly professional army for providing peace and stability,” he said.

Col. Chollet said his visit was aimed at setting the ground for the upcoming visit of the French Defence Director for security and defence cooperation to Uganda.

In an earlier meeting with the Italian Ambassador to Uganda, Mauro Massoni, Gen. Jackson Bakasumba, reassured citizens and foreigners that Uganda is generally safe for business and tourism to flourish.

“The security of the country is very peaceful, and there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

He also praised the Italian government for its significant support in stabilising Uganda through various socio-economic transformation initiatives.

Regarding the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), the army chief commended international and development partners for their efforts to pacify Somalia despite Al-Shabaab threats.
