Heroes Day marked in Gomba with free health services to locals

Ahead of the celebrations, the ministry undertook various activities aimed at giving back to the community, including a medical camp, tree planting, and soccer gala.

The medical camp, held on May 28, 2024, in Gomba, provided essential health services to the community. A total of 153 community members received HIV counseling and testing, while 147 individuals were screened for sickle cell. Additionally, 153 individuals were tested for syphilis, and 40 women were screened for cervical cancer. The camp also provided ophthalmology services, with 250 people screened and 150 given spectacles. Twelve individuals were confirmed for surgery, and 73 people donated blood.

The health camp made a significant impact on the community, providing vital health services and linking those diagnosed with conditions to appropriate care. The efforts of the OPM Luweero Triangle in organizing this camp are commendable, contributing substantially to the health and well-being of the Gomba community.

Kaboyo speaks out

Minister for Luwero Rwenzori, Hon Alice Kaboyo, highlighted the significance of this year's Heroes Day celebrations, noting that the Gomba community played a crucial role in aiding the liberation struggle. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by the community and honoring those who died in the struggle.

Minister Kaboyo also acknowledged the challenges faced by the ministry, including a limited budget, which hinders their ability to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Despite these challenges, the ministry has made significant interventions, including supporting over 500 groups of veterans, women, and vulnerable communities.

The 35th National Heroes Day celebrations serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Uganda's heroes and the importance of honoring their memory by continuing to serve and support the community.
