Karamoja MPs endorse Museveni for 2026 presidential elections

The Members of Parliament from the Karamoja sub-region have declared their support for the NRM sole candidature of President Yoweri Museveni to contest in the 2026 presidential elections.

Members of Parliament from the Karamoja sub-region have declared their support for the NRM sole candidature of President Yoweri Museveni to contest in the 2026 presidential elections.

The endorsement by the 18 MPs who were present out of the 25 was witnessed by the Secretary General of the NRM, Richard Todwong, on Monday, May 24, who embarked on a mobilization tour of the subregion in Moroto town, Moroto district.

Relative peace, stability, and inclusivity of the people from the sub-region in the growth and development of the country were some of the reasons that legislators gave for their resolve to support Museveni’s 2026 presidential bid without any internal contest from the NRM.

In an exercise conducted by NRM Electoral Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi, MPs and party district leaders signed a banner bearing their petition to the president as they overwhelmingly declared to support and campaign for the NRM candidate at the right time.

While speaking at the gathering convened in Moroto town, the Chairman of the Karamoja Parliamentary Group, Remegia Achia, said, “Unlike the pre-NRM regimes, including the colonial government, which didn’t care about the development and pacification of the area, the current government has managed to resettle and empower the Karamojong through various programs like the parish development model, disarmament with strategic appeasement policies, and Emyooga, hence wealth creation and prosperity.”

Achia said, “We pledge all our loyalty to President Museveni since it is during his regime that Karamoja has received a lot of support from the NRM government.”

“There is electricity, relative peace, and good roads like the Soroti-Moroto road, and the region is transforming. These achievements are opening Karamoja to the rest of the country,” Achia added.

Todwong, who was also accompanied by the Director of Finance and Administration, Hajjat Medina Naham, commended the legislators for trusting President Museveni to steer the nation forward for more years.

“So we thank you for identifying that President Museveni should continue because Karamoja is coming up. Previously, Karamoja was ignored and never heard about when Uganda was under other leaders, not NRM, but under NRM, Karamoja is building gradually with no interruptions,” Todwong said.

Todwong said that nation-building is like building a home, “it requires patience with a clear vision and mission with good leadership like that of President Museveni.”

Peter Lokeris, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, thanked the president for having the subregion at heart.

“From the bush, President Museveni had pacification, settlement, and empowerment of the people in this area as point number 8,” Lokeris said.

Earlier, Todwong toured the Clinker cement factory under construction near Moroto town, which can employ over 3600 people.

He also visited the Moroto Regional Referral Hospital to assess the health services being offered.
