KCCA’s move follows a directive issued by the security minister, Jim Muhwezi, on Monday, July 31, 2023, that banned boda boda stages in some parts of Kampala City Centre, such as banks, embassies, Parliamentary Avenue, Apollo Kaggwa Road, Colville Street, Nile Avenue, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the President among others.
Muhwezi said boda bodas in Kampala City Centre pose a serious security threat and warned that boda bodas found at the above-mentioned places will be arrested and prosecuted in the Courts of Law.
Kabanda also revealed that evicted boda boda riders will be relocated to over 100 gazetted stages within and outside Kampala.
She also rubbished allegations by some boda boda riders that KCCA is working with Abdullah Kittata’s Bodaboda 2010 Group to carry out the evictions.
"This is not a political issue, but a security matter. These boda boda riders follow bank customers after they leave the bank. I think it is good if they are restricted in such places," she said.
The number of boda bodas has been on the rise for the past few years, something that has raised concern among a section of people living in the City.
These people argue that the concerns have been precipitated by the continued flouting of traffic rules and the insecurity that the boda bodas presence has come with.
It should be noted that some criminal gangs have continuously used boda bodas to carry out crime.
Kampala City, according to KCCA, currently has 150,000 boda boda riders.
