Biira noted that only those who are trained, certified, and also acquired the necessary documents like national IDs and driver’s licenses among others will be allocated stages.

She added that enforcement will then commence on 1st March 2023, to rid the city of all riders who do not meet the requirements and have no gazetted areas of operation.

The city authorities envisage having about 20000-25000 bodas operating within the city center.

The Ugandan Police and KCCA recently launched an operation that they said would help clean out criminals and other non-law-abiding citizens. This was followed by mass registration of boda bodas operating in Kampala Metropolitan Area.

Plans are also underway to train boda boda riders on the right traffic practices. Police said this came as a result of many boda boda riders being involved in traffic violating acts something they say has led to more boda boda related accidents.

Some boda boda riders however feel KCCA and Police are not being fair since they are faced with challenges they don’t know to solve.

If indeed these people want us to be organised, then they should try to help us solve some challenges we face such as high fuel costs,” Samuel Kazibwe, one of the boda boda riders said.
