A visit by high-ranking government officials to AMSTUS Agro Processing & Exports Ltd yesterday underscored the company's pivotal role in Uganda's agricultural transformation. Hon. Alice Kaboyo, State Minister for Luwero-Rwenzori, and Hon. Diana Nankunda Mutasingwa, Minister of State in the Office of the Vice-President, were given a firsthand look at the company's operations, which have redefined the potential of Uganda's agricultural sector.
AMSTUS, a trailblazer in organic matooke production and processing, has established itself as a global leader in the industry. With a sprawling 642-acre farm and a dedicated workforce of over 700 employees, the company has successfully tapped into international markets, exporting fresh peeled green bananas to North America and Europe.
Minister Kaboyo expressed profound admiration for the company's achievements, highlighting the founder's vision and dedication to adding value to Uganda's staple crop. "This is a remarkable achievement," she stated, emphasizing the government's support for such initiatives. "It's inspiring to see a Ugandan product not only meeting international standards but also creating employment opportunities for our people."
Minister Mutasingwa echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of AMSTUS as a model for other farmers.
"We need to replicate this success story across the country," she said, calling for increased support and capacity building for the agricultural sector.
AMSTUS Managing Director, Ms. Atim, outlined the company's commitment to sustainability and innovation. The company's integration of animal husbandry into its operations, producing organic manure for its banana plantations, is a prime example of its eco-friendly practices.
"We are proud to be certified organic," she said, emphasizing the company's adherence to rigorous international standards.
The visit culminated in a pledge by Minister Kaboyo to support AMSTUS employees in forming a savings and credit cooperative (SACC0) to improve their livelihoods. This commitment further solidifies the government's support for the agricultural sector and its workforce.
As AMSTUS continues to expand its operations and product range, including the upcoming launch of matooke chips, the company is poised to make an even greater impact on Uganda's economy and its reputation as a global leader in sustainable agriculture.
The visit by the government officials to AMSTUS Agro Processing & Exports Ltd serves as a testament to the company's success and the government's commitment to supporting the growth of Uganda's agricultural sector.
