Heroic police officer Darlington Eiru collapses dead at city police post

In a shocking turn of events, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Darlington Eiru, who was serving as the Officer in Charge at Clock Tower Police Station in Kampala, collapsed unexpectedly in his office. He was swiftly transported to Nsambya Hospital, where medical personnel declared him dead upon arrival.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, confirmed the incident.

"Yes, our OC Clock Tower became unconscious in the office today, was taken to Nsambya Hospital, and unfortunately was pronounced dead," he stated.

Owoyesigire later took to social media to offer his condolences, writing, "Rest in peace, Darlington. May God give your family strength during this difficult time."

The family of ASP Eiru, with Hon. Jonathan Ebwalu, MP for Soroti West Division, also shared the sad news.

"Hon. Jonathan Ebwalu, MP Soroti West Division, on behalf of the family of the late Mzee James Peter Eiru, in conjunction with the Uganda Police Force, announces with deep sorrow the untimely death of their son, Assistant Superintendent of Police Darlington Eiru, who was the OC Station at Clock Tower, Kampala," read the announcement.

ASP Eiru was well-regarded for his heroic deeds, notably in 2020, when he was the Officer-in-Charge of Namanve Industrial Park Police Station.

During his tenure there, he assisted a pregnant woman in delivering a baby boy under emergency circumstances.

Vincent Abisa's wife experienced complications and contacted the police for transportation to a health center.

Upon realising the urgency of her condition, ASP Eiru put on his gloves and helped her deliver the baby boy safely before rushing both mother and child to the clinic.

ASP Eiru passed away on the morning of Sunday, July 21, 2024. Funeral services will commence with a service at St. Phillips and Andrews Church in Mukono on Monday, July 22, 2024, at 12:00 PM, followed by a vigil at his home in Mukono.

Another service will be held at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Soroti on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM. ASP Eiru will be laid to rest on Wednesday, July 24, at his ancestral home in Oderai Cell, Oderai Ward, Soroti West Division.

ASP Darlington Eiru’s untimely death leaves a void in the Uganda Police Force and the communities he served. His dedication and bravery will be remembered by many, especially those whose lives he touched through his acts of service and compassion.
