General (Rtd) Caleb Akandwanaho, known as Salim Saleh, Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation has emphasised his lack of interest in party politics, stressing that his role is purely to drive national development.

Gen Saleh made these remarks on Saturday while presiding over the graduation of 419 cadres in Gulu district.

These individuals completed a civic education training program organised by the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance from July 19 to 25, 2024, in Lokole-Agago district.

The training aimed to empower communities for effective participation in national programs and was attended by leaders from the Acholi sub-region, Resident District Commissioners, Local Government leaders, and youths.

In his address, Gen Salim Saleh emphasised the importance of adopting mechanised farming to boost production. He urged leaders to leverage available technology and land for transformation, clearly stating, “I don’t do politics, my focus is only development.”

Gen Saleh’s remarks come amidst a backdrop where he is often seen as a shadowy figure within the ruling NRM party, known for supporting local musicians and entertainers. Many artists seek financial aid from him, reinforcing his image as a behind-the-scenes influencer. However, during this event, he reiterated his commitment to development rather than political maneuvering.

Hon. Akelo Beatrice Akoli, State Minister for Monitoring and Economic Planning and MP for Agago, expressed gratitude to Gen Saleh for organising a tour of Terra Agri Farm and Atiaka Sugar Factory. She highlighted how these tours broadened the perspectives of the people in Acholi. She also commended the State Minister for ICT and National Guidance for initiating the transformative training, which she said dispelled misconceptions about government programs.

Brig Gen Felix Busizoori, 4 Division Commander, also praised Gen Saleh for the training initiative. He encouraged participants to share their newfound knowledge with their local communities, fostering patriotism and nationalistic character. Brig Gen Busizoori stressed the importance of fighting corruption and promoting national development, urging leaders to reject divisive politics and embrace productivity and new ideas.

Brig Gen Keith Katungi, Commander 5 Division, urged cadres to change their mindset and embrace hard work following the week-long training. He pointed out that areas with high illiteracy and poverty levels often experience conflict. He emphasised the need for communities to utilise government programs aimed at improving their livelihoods. At Terra Agri Farm, Brig Gen Katungi encouraged cadres to adopt the 4-acre model system to their small landholdings without feeling intimidated by large-scale enterprises. However, he also emphasised the need for streamlining land ownership in the Acholi sub-region, citing the principle, “What belongs to all belongs to none.

The training covered various subjects, including civic education, ideology, political economy, and national guidance. Members of Parliament from Agago District attended the function, underscoring the event’s significance in fostering community development and national unity.
