KCCA relocates King Mutesa monument

The eye-catching monument which was commissioned 17 year ago at the Grand Imperial roundabout, was recently taken apart by KCCA to pave the way for the expansion of the junction.

It is to be placed on the Nile Avenue green belt located near Kampala Serena and Imperial Royale hotels.

KCCA says the Speke Road roundabout will be fitted with traffic lights to ease the traffic flow.

The monument of Buganda's 35th king and Uganda's first president was commissioned in 2007 by President Yoweri Museveni and Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.

Concerns

Although the Authority held discussions with Buganda Kingdom before removing the monument, Mr Christopher Bwanika, the Buganda Kingdom Attorney General said yesterday that there were fears about KCCA damaging the statue.

Bwanika told reporters that these concerns were brought to them by the family of Gordon Wavamunno, who donated the monument to the Buganda Kingdom.

“The family wishes for the monument to remain in its original form. We therefore hope that KCCA will ensure that its original state is preserved,” he said.

Bwanika added that although Buganda Kingdom agreed to the relocation, they insisted on placing the monument in another busy place where it is still visible to the public.

It is understood that KCCA removed the statue of King Mutesa, leaving behind the base where it stood.

The city authority says a new base will be constructed at the new site on the next one month.
