MP proposes direct election for Leader of Opposition

Mityana South Member of Parliament, Richard Lumu, has introduced a motion seeking leave to present a Private Member's Bill, known as the Administration of Parliament Bill 2024. This proposed legislation aims to change the current method of appointing the Leader of the Opposition in Uganda’s Parliament.

Presently, the opposition party with the most MPs selects their leader. However, Lumu's bill proposes that the Leader of the Opposition be elected directly by all opposition MPs.

“The current system for appointing the Leader of the Opposition can sometimes appear undemocratic,” MP Lumu stated. “By allowing all opposition MPs to vote for their leader, we can ensure that this crucial position is more representative of the opposition.”

The bill was tabled during the first regional parliamentary sitting held in Gulu City and could signal a notable shift from the existing system. If enacted, it would grant opposition MPs greater autonomy in choosing their leader, potentially leading to a more representative and accountable opposition.
