According to the Ministry of Health, about 3.2% of Ugandans have diabetes. Those with heart disease stand at 6%, 350 people out of every 100,000 have cancer while 8,000 new cases of cancer are recorded annually.
In a bid to combat this emerging danger, a new mobile app built to encourage healthier lifestyles and help prevent such non-communicable diseases has been launched.
The Maisha Fiti, a product of Jubilee Insurance is hoped to drive more Ugandans to engage in physical activity in a fun and engaging way.
Caroline Ndungu, the Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications of Jubliee Group said at the launch of the Maisha Fit app in Kampala on Wednesday, that users will be able to measure their steps, monitor their cardiovascular activity, and blood pressure through the app.
The app, the first of its kind in the country was unveiled as part of the campaign dubbed “Do anything for the steps,” which is meant to encourage individuals to take up activities such as walking, running, or cycling to increase energy levels and overall vitality making life more enjoyable.
“We have set goals complaint with the World Health Organization into the program in the Step Master Challenge. If you get the number of steps in or the number of calories burnt, you are eligible for discounts and cashback on a quarterly basis on your premier Jubilee health cover,” she said.
Dan Musiime, the CEO of Jubilee Health Insurance Uganda, said the Maisha Fiti platform is intended to promote wellness in communities.
“Traditionally, health Insurance has been that you have to fall sick to go see a doctor; but we are saying people should do everything possible to avoid going to the consulting room.
“One sure way of preventing illness is by living a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating healthy,” he said.
In the app, Musiime said users will be able to take on exciting challenges and meet a wider community in the wellness space while working to live healthier lives.
The Maisha App was launched in Lugogo amid a marathon of physical activity challenges where several participants won prizes ranging from smartwatches to other physical fitness equipment.
