Opposition has been in disarray since I left - Mpuuga

Former Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon Mathias Mpuuga did not miss an opportunity to toot his own horn yesterday, during a thanksgiving ceremony he held in Kitovu in Masaka City.

Mpuuga used the event, attended by hundreds of his supporters, fellow leaders from the government, the church and Buganda Kingdom, to chide the opposition leadership in parliament, which he said was not the same ever since he left last year.

The Nyendo-Mukungwe MP said he was grateful to God for the wisdom he gave him to guide the parliamentary opposition without any hitch, unlike what is happening today.

“I thank God for lending me some knowledge to be able to lead others in serenity,” he said.

When I stepped aside in leadership, you must be hearing how things are running amok. I have to thank God because if he wanted to take that wisdom away, he could, as he did with King Nebuchadnezzar.”

Mpuuga was removed as Leader of Opposition in December last year and replaced by Joel Ssenyonyi.

Months later, his ties with the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) were to take a turn for worse as he was accused of improperly allocating himself Shs 500 million while he served as Parliamentary Commissioner.

The NUP attempted to have him removed from the Commission, but the move was blocked by House Speaker Anitah Among.

At yesterday’s function, Mpuuga said during the recent tumultuous times, he had learnt many lessons including, humility and forgiveness.

He also vowed never again to work with people without studying them first to know their true intentions.

“From today onward, I will endeavour to study what people do rather than what they say before I seek to work with them,” he said.
