'Misunderstandings with Rwanda now behind us' - Minister Oryem

During the recent 30th-anniversary celebrations of the Liberation of Rwanda held in Kampala, Uganda's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, delivered a powerful message of unyielding solidarity between Uganda and Rwanda.

Minister Okello Oryem toasts with Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Joseph Rutabana.

Speaking at the residence of Rwanda's High Commissioner to Uganda, Joseph Rutabana, Minister Oryem emphasized the enduring strength of the bilateral relations, stating that no disagreements could undermine the countries' bond.

He noted that previous fights between the two neighbours had worked to unite them further rather than separating them.

Let all doubters be warned that no amount of misunderstandings, or differences, between Uganda and Rwanda are lasting and [they] cannot in any form or shape shake our relationship or even shift our relationship by a millimeter,” Minister Oryem declared.

The celebration was a vibrant affair, with over 400 attendees, including members of the Rwandan community, diplomats, and friends of Rwanda, gathering to commemorate Rwanda’s journey since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The audience participated in singing patriotic songs that recalled the struggle and triumph of Rwanda’s liberation led by President Paul Kagame.

Minister Oryem also took the opportunity to salute President Kagame and the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) for their pivotal role in stopping the genocide and spearheading the nation's remarkable recovery.

He reinforced the message of unity, expressing Uganda’s commitment to continue supporting Rwanda. “Rwanda and Uganda enjoy a solid relationship, as solid as a rock can be, and we stand committed to continue walking side by side with Rwanda in its journey,” he affirmed.

Highlighting the historical ties between the two nations, Oryem recalled the longstanding cordial relations that predate the modern national boundaries which once divided communities and families. He announced Uganda’s anticipation of hosting the next Uganda-Rwanda Joint Permanent Commission (JPC), following the successful session held in Kigali the previous year.

The significance of the JPC was echoed by High Commissioner Rutabana, who extended gratitude to the international community, particularly Uganda, for their support over the years. Rutabana remarked on the instrumental role Uganda has played, even at times facing blame, in Rwanda's internal challenges. He detailed the achievements of the latest JPC meeting, which included discussions on enhancing bilateral relations, infrastructure, and cross-border trade for mutual benefits.

The event was also marked by the presence of high-ranking Ugandan military and police officials, reflecting the deep-seated military and strategic cooperation between Uganda and Rwanda. Among the attendees were Brig Gen Michael Kabango, representing Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and Senior Commissioner of Police Dennis Namuwoza, representing Uganda’s Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba.
