This year, a total of 12,913 graduates will receive degrees and diplomas from the country’s leading education institution.

Of these, 132 are graduating with PhDs, 1,585 with masters, 11,016 with bachelor's, 156 with postgraduate diplomas and 24 with undergraduate diplomas.

What has caught people’s attention, however, is the sheer number of political leaders and activists from the opposition that are part of the graduation.

Among these is the National Unity Platform’s Head of Mobilization Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, who snatced a Master’s Degree in Peace and Conflict.

Nyanzi is the elder brother to NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), who attended the graduation event in person at Makerere University.

Another notable opposition leader graduating this year is Forum for Democratic Change’s Doreen Nyanjura, who graduated with a Masters in Gender Studies.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Kampala City said she picked this course because of the gender backlash and stereotypes that she suffered when she was appointed to the top city position the youngest yet also unmarried.

I am a firm believer in Education. For me, this is not the end, it’s just the beginning. All I can say is that it’s, possible to balance work, family, activism, studies and even graduate in time as long as the will is there,” she said.

Shamim Nambassa is yet another NUP activist who graduated from Makerere this week.

Nambassa served as the 87th Guild President at Makerere under the NUP flag. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Pharmacy.

Celebrating the Milestone, she took to social media to declare herself the next Health Minister under the Bobi Wine Government.

Another notable figure to graduate this year is Ruth Kirabo Nyeko, the wife of Hon Derreck Nyeko, the NUP Member of Parliament for Makindye East.

Kirabo took home a Bachelors Degree in Education.
