Police officials have quizzed the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) about the operations of its newly launched leadership training school in Kamwokya.

The NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya was summoned early this week to the Police Headquarters in Naguru school amid concerns about the kind of training the school carries out.

The school, which operates out of the party’s former headquarters in Kamwokya was launched by party President Bobi Wine on June 10 this year.

During the meeting on Thursday, which was initiated by SPC Moses Kafeero on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, police officials posed several questions about the nature and intent of the leadership school.

Mr. Rubongoya says the authorities inquired about the reasons for establishing the school, the number of learners, admission criteria, the target group, the identity of the facilitators, and whether they included foreigners.

They also sought information about the funding, the duration of the programs, and, most critically, the content covered in the curriculum.

The police expressed concerns based on information suggesting that the school's curriculum might include teachings on violence and strategies for regime change, modeled after foreign examples.

Mr. Rubongoya however, countered these claims in his post, emphasizing that the school is a legitimate party function aimed at training leaders in various aspects of leadership and citizenship.

He assured that the school operates within the legal framework and that its activities are transparent and lawful.

Despite the NUP's assurances, the police indicated they would continue to monitor the activities of the school closely.

A controversial request was also made for the school to submit weekly reports to the DPC Kira Road Police detailing the topics to be covered by the facilitators.

Mr. Rubongoya expressed strong objections to this demand, viewing it as potentially overreaching and indicative of a broader intent to suppress the school's operations.

This encounter is not isolated but part of a broader context of tension between the government and opposition parties in Uganda.

Mr. Rubongoya had previously voiced concerns over the intentions behind the police's interest in the school.

In an earlier social media post, he speculated whether the scrutiny was a precursor to accusations of the school engaging in rebellious or subversive activities, highlighting a pattern he perceives as characteristic of authoritarian regimes fearing educational efforts.
